Ok, first things first. You need to scroll down the page to the statistical information and make note of the weather. Now let me remind you that this is Arizona and I started this ride close to 8 am. So, Jeff had a garage sale to run this morning so he asked if we could move our long run to Sunday this weekend. No problem. However looking at the forecast, I saw that the high on Sat was supposed to be in the mid 80. Damn, it's a crime to sit indoors on what I'm hoping is the beginning of fall in AZ. My intentions were to take Tiffany, my bike, out for a challenging long ride. Naturally I headed towards DC Ranch. I've done a 20 mile loop out here once before, so I figured I'd start with that and see how I felt. I had picked up a new endurance beverage at REI the night before called Cytomax, and filled one of my two water bottles with it. It supposed to decrease lactic acid build up, and increase your VO2. Thought I'd give it a shot, I'm always up for some chemical way of making the pain stop. As you can see from the elevation below, the first 6-7 miles are up hill. It is brutal, and your legs feel like they are on fire. Reaching the top of the hill at Dynamite Rd is where the fun begins. You now have a downhill stretch that is quite the adrenaline rush. You sit back in the saddle, grab the drops, tuck yourself down and enjoy gravity. There was a bit of a wind so I only got up to 29 mph, but very fun (and scary). Looping back to where I began involved a small series of climbs and descents, but after tackling that first 7 miles, it seemed like nothing. Also, I have to say that I followed the directions for my new beverage, and drank half 30 minutes into my ride and the other half 30 minutes later. You can call in the placebo effect if you want, but I think the stuff actually works. I'm not gonna say that I wasn't uncomfortable, but I was much better than the first time I did this route. As I reached the starting point at DC Ranch Marketplace, I felt great. I had no obligations and the weather was still awesome. So I decided to take Thompson Peak East on my usual running route down F'U hill for some additional miles. Again, the descent was fun even with the wind coming head on. I stopped at the bottom to take a GU and headed back up F'U hill. Once I reached DC Ranch Marketplace, I decided to call it quits for the morning. Looking at my Garmin, I saw that I had just completed a 30 mile ride. It sure did not feel like it. Everything felt great. Wow, what a difference the weather makes! One step closer to potentially entering my first bike race in November! Activity
