I'm not Superman...yet!

Ok, I realized last week that I'm not Superman and I can't do it all! This realization is a bit dissapointing for me because in my short 3 years of running experience, I've always felt I could do it all (father, husband, son, manager, runner). Couple this with the drive to want to be good at all of this, and you can see why I might be setting myself up for disaster.

As most of you know, I added the sport of cycling to this formula about 3 months back. I've been learning a ton about the world of cycling, I can't get enough info...I want it all now. Not only do I want the knowledge but I also want the skills to do it well. I'm in the middle of training for the marathon in January and 2 weeks ago my weekly mileage drastically increased. I wanted to continue to train at a high intesity and also continue to learn and apply new skills to a new sport (cycling).

I made the decision last week that it can't be done. In order for me to reach my sub 4 marathon goal in January, something has got to give. So, tough as it was, I mapped out my fitness goals for the next year realizing that I'm not Superman.

So in order to put it down on paper...here it is. For the next 2 months, I'm going to really focus on my marathon goal and become a stronger, faster runner. Cycling will still play a role, but it will be used a cross-trainer when I can fit it in. I will continue to soak up knowledge about cycling but have come to the realization that I will not be competative in this sport for right now.

After the first of the year, after I kick ass in January, I'm going to focus my attention on multi-sport. This involves learning and applying new skills to 2 new sports....cycling, and dare I say swimming. I'm going to get formal coaching for my swimming skills, begin to better my cycling skills, oh, and continue to maintain my running skills. Along the way, I'll test myself with formal racing in all three sports individually and as a whole with some sprint tri's next fall??? In addition, I'd love to be able to run the NYC Marathon next Nov. However, the idea is that a year plus of multisport training will prepare me for my first major multisport goal of doing a half-ironman (70.3) event in Sonoma, CA in 2010. There I said it again, "I'm not Superman" but setting realistic goals will hopefully get me closer to Superman status!

You can do it! Sub 4 marathon time. I am training with you in spirit! Also I will be ready to do formal swimming lessons next year too! Maybe we can do the Half Ironman in 2010 together! :) You are superman...even he does one thing at a time. You just have to learn to fly from point A to B then from point B to C...just like Superman!
